AWS SAP-C02 Exam Overview
What to Expect
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional exam costs $300 USD You'll face 75 questions in 180 minutes, giving you roughly 2 minutes and 24 seconds per question. Scaled score from 100 to 1000, and you need 750 to pass — that's 30 points higher than the Associate, which tells you something about the difficulty. Like all AWS exams, some questions are unscored pilots, but you can't tell which ones, so don't slack on anything.
Prerequisites and Audience
AWS says you should have two years of hands-on experience designing and deploying on AWS, and they strongly recommend holding the SAA first. Here's the thing — they're not kidding. If you haven't actually built production workloads with Organizations, multi-account setups, and cross-region architectures, this exam will eat you alive. This isn't the kind of cert you cram for without real-world experience backing you up. This is for senior cloud architects who design complex, multi-tier, multi-account AWS environments. If you're the person other engineers come to when they can't figure out the right architecture, that's the level this cert targets. It's not a "next step after the Associate" — it's a significant jump in depth and complexity.
Staying Certified
Good for three years, just like the Associate. You can retake the full exam, or do the shorter recertification assessment on Skill Builder. Most people go the Skill Builder route since it's cheaper and less painful than sitting through another three-hour exam.
Recent Changes
SAP-C02 replaced C01 back in November 2022 and is still the current version as of April 2026. The big shifts were more containers and serverless at scale, modern data architectures, and heavier coverage of cost optimization and organizational governance. If you're using old C01 materials, you're missing a lot.
