AZ-305 Exam Overview
What to Expect
The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert exam costs $165 USD You'll face 50 questions in 120 minutes, giving you roughly 2 minutes and 24 seconds per question. 0 to 1000 scale, passing at 700. Case study sections are weighted and scored as a block, so doing poorly on one case study can hurt more than missing a few standalone questions.
Prerequisites and Audience
You need AZ-104 (Azure Administrator Associate) to earn the full Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential — AZ-305 alone just gives you the design exam. And honestly, don't even attempt AZ-305 without solid AZ-104 knowledge. The architecture exam assumes you already know how Azure services work. If you can't explain VNet peering or NSG rules off the top of your head, start with AZ-104 first. Solutions architects who design cloud and hybrid solutions on Azure. This isn't for people just learning Azure — it's for those who've already been building things and need to prove they can design at an architectural level. If your job involves making decisions about which Azure services to use and how they fit together, this is your cert.
Staying Certified
Valid for one year — yes, Microsoft certs expire faster than AWS or GCP. The good news is renewal is completely free. Six months before expiry, you get access to an untimed, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn. It's honestly pretty painless compared to retaking the full exam.
Recent Changes
AZ-305 replaced the old AZ-303/AZ-304 combo, consolidating two exams into one. The current version puts more emphasis on Azure Arc for hybrid scenarios, Bicep templates for IaC, and Microsoft Entra ID (which is what they're calling Azure AD now — get used to the new name because the exam uses it). Case studies remain a distinctive element that other cloud exams don't really have.
