CCNA Exam Overview

What to Expect

The Cisco Certified Network Associate (200-301) exam costs $330 USD You'll face 100 questions in 120 minutes, giving you roughly 1 minute and 12 seconds per question. Pass/fail on a 0 to 1000 scale. The passing score is approximately 825, though Cisco doesn't officially publish the exact number. That's a high bar, and it means you need to be strong across all domains.

Prerequisites and Audience

No formal prerequisites, but if you can't do subnetting in your sleep, you're not ready. Cisco recommends a year of experience implementing their solutions, which is reasonable. You need a solid understanding of IP addressing, the OSI model, and basic switching and routing concepts before you start studying for this exam. Network engineers, network admins, and IT professionals who build and maintain enterprise networks. CCNA is the standard entry-level cert for networking careers — it's what employers look for when hiring junior to mid-level networking staff. If you want to work in networking, you basically need this.

Staying Certified

Good for three years. You can renew by passing any current Cisco exam, earning Continuing Education credits, or completing qualifying training through Cisco Learning Network.

CCNA What the Exam Tests

Six domains: Network Fundamentals (20%), Network Access (20%), IP Connectivity (25%), IP Services (10%), Security Fundamentals (15%), and Automation and Programmability (10%). IP Connectivity is the heaviest at 25%, and it's where subnetting lives. You need to calculate subnet masks, broadcast addresses, and usable host ranges quickly — not "eventually figure it out" quickly, but "in under 30 seconds" quickly.

IP Connectivity

IP Connectivity carries 25% of the exam weight, making it the single most impactful domain. Allocate your study time accordingly and make sure you can answer questions on this topic confidently before sitting the exam.

Network Fundamentals

Network Fundamentals at 20% is a substantial portion of the exam. You can't afford to be weak here. Focus on understanding the core concepts and common scenario patterns.

Network Access

Network Access at 20% is a substantial portion of the exam. You can't afford to be weak here. Focus on understanding the core concepts and common scenario patterns.

Security Fundamentals

Security Fundamentals accounts for 15% of questions. While not the heaviest domain, it can make the difference between passing and failing. Don't neglect it.

Question Format

Multiple-choice, multiple-response, and drag-and-drop. Some questions show you actual CLI output — "show ip route" or "show vlan brief" — and ask you to interpret what's happening. Others present a network topology and ask you to identify configuration issues. If you've never looked at real CLI output, practice with Packet Tracer until it's second nature.

CCNA How to Prepare

Study Timeline

Three to four months for candidates with basic networking knowledge. If you're completely new to networking, budget four to six months. Subnetting alone requires weeks of dedicated practice to get fast enough. Don't underestimate the time investment for the automation domain either — it's only 10%, but it's unfamiliar territory for many networking people.

Top Resources

Download Cisco Packet Tracer immediately — it's free and it's essential. The Official Cert Guide by Wendell Odom is the bible. Jeremy's IT Lab on YouTube is phenomenal and free. David Bombal's courses are also excellent. For subnetting specifically, use practice tools like Subnetting.org until you can do it in your sleep. Labs on Cisco Learning Network round things out.

Common Mistakes

Not practicing subnetting enough — this is by far the most common reason people fail. If you can't subnet a /21 in your head within 20 seconds, keep practicing. The other mistake is ignoring the automation and programmability domain because "that's not real networking." It absolutely is the modern CCNA, and questions about REST APIs, Python basics, and configuration management tools like Ansible will show up.

Hands-On Advice

Download Packet Tracer and build networks from scratch. Configure VLANs, trunk links, OSPF and EIGRP routing, DHCP, NAT, and ACLs. Build a multi-site topology with redundant links. Add switch security features like port security and DHCP snooping. Then try some basic automation — write a simple Python script that connects to a router and pulls its running config. If you can do all of that, you're ready.

Time Management

About 100 questions in 120 minutes — that's roughly 1.2 minutes per question, which is tight. Subnetting questions are the time killers. If you're doing the math on paper during the exam, you're too slow. You need to subnet in your head. Seriously, practice until it's automatic. The people who run out of time on CCNA are almost always the ones stuck doing long division on subnet calculations.

CCNA Difficulty Analysis & Pass Rates

How Hard Is This Exam?

On a scale of 1 to 10, CCNA is about a 7. It's harder than most people expect for an "Associate-level" cert. The difficulty has two sources: the breadth of topics (six domains covering everything from switching to routing to wireless to automation) and the subnetting speed requirement. You can understand subnetting conceptually and still fail because you can't do it fast enough under exam time pressure. The approximately 825 passing score is one of the highest among entry-level networking certs. Topics that trip people up most are OSPF neighbor adjacency troubleshooting, STP root bridge election, VLAN/trunk configuration, and the automation and programmability domain that many traditional networking people neglect.

Pass Rate Data

Cisco doesn't publish official pass rates. Community estimates suggest a first-attempt rate around 50-60%, which reflects the exam's difficulty for an Associate-level cert. Candidates who can subnet quickly and have hands-on Packet Tracer experience pass at significantly higher rates. If you're consistently scoring above 85% on practice tests, you're in strong shape. The high passing threshold means close isn't good enough — be genuinely prepared before booking.

CCNA How Our Practice Tests Map to This Exam

Each Pruvos practice test mirrors the CCNA format: 100 questions with a 120-minute timer, distributed across six domains — IP Connectivity (25%), Network Fundamentals (20%), Network Access (20%), Security Fundamentals (15%), IP Services (10%), and Automation and Programmability (10%). We have 6 full practice tests with 600 unique questions. The tight pacing of 1.2 minutes per question matches the real exam's time pressure, which is critical for building subnetting speed. If your IP Connectivity domain score is below 75% on Test 1, focus on OSPF and routing fundamentals before moving forward — it's the heaviest domain and the one that makes or breaks most candidates.

CCNA Why Practice Tests Matter

Practice tests are the single most effective study tool for the CCNA exam. They reveal your weak domains before the real exam does, and getting questions wrong in practice is how you learn. Each practice test here mirrors the real exam format: 100 questions, timed at 120 minutes, with the same 6-domain distribution.

Don't just take practice tests and check your score. Review every wrong answer and understand why the correct option is better. For the CCNA, pay special attention to IP Connectivity (25%) and Network Fundamentals (20%) questions since they carry the most weight.
