ITIL 4 CDS Exam Overview
What to Expect
The ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support exam costs $399 USD (exam voucher only; training course sold separately and typically runs $1,500-2,500 depending on provider) You'll face 40 questions in 90 minutes, giving you roughly 2 minutes and 15 seconds per question. You need 28 out of 40 marks to pass, which works out to 70%. All questions are multiple-choice with four answer options. Some questions are worth more than one mark, so read the mark allocation carefully. There's no negative marking, so always answer every question.
Prerequisites and Audience
You need to hold the ITIL 4 Foundation certificate before you can attempt this one. That's the hard prerequisite — no exceptions. Beyond that, PeopleCert recommends at least two years of IT service management experience, and honestly, you'll want it. This exam assumes you already think in terms of value streams, practices, and the service value chain. If those concepts aren't second nature yet, Foundation-level review should come first. This cert is aimed at IT practitioners who are involved in the day-to-day creation, delivery, and support of IT services. Think service desk managers, DevOps leads, delivery managers, and anyone who's responsible for making sure services actually work in production. If you're the person who bridges the gap between "we built it" and "customers can use it," this is your exam.
Staying Certified
ITIL 4 certifications don't expire on their own, but PeopleCert requires you to maintain your credentials through their digital badge program. You'll need to renew your digital badge every three years by earning CPD points or retaking the exam. It's not as onerous as it sounds, but don't ignore the renewal emails.
