What to Expect

The Certified ScrumMaster exam costs $995 to $1,395, and that includes the required two-day training course with a Certified Scrum Trainer. You can't take the exam without completing the training, so the cost is what it is. Shop around for trainers — quality and price vary quite a bit. You'll face 50 questions in 60 minutes, giving you roughly 1 minute and 12 seconds per question. 37 out of 50 correct (74%) to pass. That's a very achievable threshold, especially right after the training.

Prerequisites and Audience

You have to complete a two-day CSM training course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer. That's it. No prior Scrum experience, no other certifications. Show up, participate in the training, and you're eligible to take the exam. Aspiring and current Scrum Masters, team leads, and anyone who facilitates Scrum teams. CSM is the most popular entry point to the Scrum Master role, and it's what most job postings ask for when they list "Scrum certification required." Whether that makes it the best Scrum cert is debatable (see PSM I), but it's definitely the most recognized.

Staying Certified

Valid for two years. Renewal requires 20 Scrum Education Units and a $100 fee. SEUs are easy to accumulate — attending webinars, reading Scrum articles, or participating in community events all count.

The exam covers the Scrum framework as defined in the Scrum Guide: three accountabilities (Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developers), five events (Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective), three artifacts (Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Increment), and the Scrum values. It's all based on the Scrum Guide, and the training course walks through everything.

The Scrum Alliance website has additional resources. If you want extra practice, Scrum.org's Open Assessments are useful even though they're technically for PSM.

Common Mistakes

Overthinking it. Seriously, the most common mistake is stressing about this exam more than it deserves. If you attended the two-day training, participated actively, and read the Scrum Guide, you're prepared. This isn't a trick exam. It tests foundational Scrum knowledge at a level that matches what the training covers.

Hands-On Advice

If you're not currently on a Scrum team, find one to shadow or volunteer to facilitate Scrum events at your organization. Practice writing Sprint Goals, running retrospectives, and identifying impediments. The exam doesn't require this experience, but it makes the concepts feel real instead of abstract — and it'll help you in your actual Scrum Master career far more than passing the exam will.

Testing Options

Taken online after completing the training course. It's unproctored and open-book. You have 90 days from the end of your training to take it. Most people take it within a few days while everything is still fresh.

Time Management

With 60 minutes for 50 questions, time is basically never an issue. Most people finish in 30 to 40 minutes. The questions are clear and direct — if you know the Scrum Guide, you won't be agonizing over answers.

How Hard Is This Exam?

On a scale of 1 to 10, CSM is about a 2.5. Let's be honest — this is one of the easiest professional certifications to pass. The exam is open-book, unproctored, taken after a mandatory two-day training course, and has a 74% passing threshold. Most candidates pass on their first attempt within days of completing the training. The "difficulty" is really just making sure you attended the training and read the Scrum Guide.
