CSM Exam Overview
What to Expect
The Certified ScrumMaster exam costs $995 to $1,395 which includes the required two-day training course with a Certified Scrum Trainer. You cannot take the exam without completing the training. You'll face 50 questions in 60 minutes, giving you roughly 1 minute and 12 seconds per question. 37 out of 50 correct answers (74%) to pass.
Prerequisites and Audience
Completion of a two-day CSM training course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). No prior Scrum experience is required. Aspiring and current Scrum Masters, team leads, and anyone who facilitates Scrum teams. CSM is the most popular entry point to the Scrum Master role.
Staying Certified
Valid for two years. Renewal requires 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and a $100 fee. SEUs can be earned through courses, events, and self-study.
CSM What the Exam Tests
Tests the Scrum framework: three roles (Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developers), five events (Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective), three artifacts (Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Increment), and Scrum values. The exam is based on the Scrum Guide.
Scrum Events & Ceremonies
Scrum Events & Ceremonies at 18% is a substantial portion of the exam. You can't afford to be weak here. Focus on understanding the core concepts and common scenario patterns.
Scrum Framework Fundamentals
Scrum Framework Fundamentals accounts for 16% of questions. While not the heaviest domain, it can make the difference between passing and failing. Don't neglect it.
Scrum Artifacts & Product Backlog
Scrum Artifacts & Product Backlog accounts for 16% of questions. While not the heaviest domain, it can make the difference between passing and failing. Don't neglect it.
Scrum Roles & Responsibilities
Scrum Roles & Responsibilities accounts for 14% of questions. While not the heaviest domain, it can make the difference between passing and failing. Don't neglect it.
Question Format
Multiple-choice, 50 questions in 60 minutes. Questions are relatively straightforward if you paid attention during the training and read the Scrum Guide.
CSM How to Prepare
Study Timeline
The two-day training course is the primary preparation. Read the Scrum Guide (13 pages) before and after the training. Most candidates pass on their first attempt shortly after completing the course.
Top Resources
The Scrum Guide (free, 13 pages at scrumguides.org), your CST's training materials, and the Scrum Alliance website. Scrum.org also provides supplementary learning resources that apply to CSM preparation.
Common Mistakes
Overthinking the exam after completing the training. The CSM exam tests foundational Scrum knowledge, not advanced scenarios. If you attended the training and read the Scrum Guide, you're well-prepared.
Hands-On Advice
If you're not currently on a Scrum team, volunteer to facilitate Scrum ceremonies at your organization. Practice writing Sprint Goals, facilitating retrospectives, and removing impediments. Even informal Scrum practice reinforces the concepts tested on the exam.
CSM Why Practice Tests Matter
Practice tests are the single most effective study tool for the CSM exam. They reveal your weak domains before the real exam does, and getting questions wrong in practice is how you learn. Each practice test here mirrors the real exam format: 50 questions, timed at 60 minutes, with the same 7-domain distribution.
Don't just take practice tests and check your score. Review every wrong answer and understand why the correct option is better. For the CSM, pay special attention to Scrum Events & Ceremonies (18%) and Scrum Framework Fundamentals (16%) questions since they carry the most weight.
